Taxes

Municipalities throughout the state charge a variety of taxes on hotel rooms, car rentals, and parking in commercial lots or garages. These range from 4% to park in a commercial lot to 5% to rent a car; keep in mind that these taxes are in addition to any other taxes, such as local sales taxes. Some of the larger airports, such as JFK and LaGuardia, charge a departure tax of $4.50.

New York City's sales tax of 8.375% applies to almost everything you can buy at retail, including restaurant meals. Nonprepared foods (from grocery stores) and prescription drugs are tax-exempt. Sales tax rates elsewhere in the state are 7%–8.75%.
